Character Name: Alicent Hightower
Canon: House of the Dragon
Canon Point: 1x05
Age: 18
Background: Wiki
Since it still needs updating:
*Alicent continues to visit Viserys and the two share a friendly relationship, talking a great deal.
*Viserys warns her not to tell Rhaenyra as she wouldn't understand
*Alicent tries to advise Rhaenyra in her strained relationship with her father, offering some way for her to try and connect with her mother in death through prayer.
*Viserys, despite being urged to marry Laena Velaryon, declares he'll marry Alicent.
*This leads to a break between Alicent and Rhaenyra, as Rhaenyra blames Alicent
*Alicent has a son, Aegon, that many start to press to become the heir (particularly Otto)
*Despite this, Alicent supports Rhaenyra as heir, defending her to several ladies of the court, as well as privately with Otto.
*She advises Viserys to support Daemon's war in the Stepstones, urging him to send aid because it's for the good of the realm.
*Alicent has a daughter, Helaena
*Alicent shows signs of loneliness in her marriage and court. When Daemon returns, Alicent does her best to be a gracious hostess, but her efforts are mocked by a drunk Viserys. This leads to Rhaenyra trying to stick up for Alicent.
*The pair reconcile, expressing how much they miss their friendship. Alicent revealing how alone she feels.
*After being summoned by Viserys during the night, she's in the room the next morning when she hears her father share rumors that Rhaenyra was seen with Daemon in a brothel and was likely deflowered by him.
*Alicent confronts Rhaenyra privately, but is reassured by the princess, who swears on her mother's memory
*Because of this, Alicent defends Rhaenyra to Viserys, instead suggesting Daemon lied
*Otto is sent away from court as part of Rhaenyra's deal with Viserys to marry as he chooses.
*Alicent is reprimanded by her father, implying it's her fault because she sided with Rhaenyra
*Otto continues to assert that Alicent's children won't be safe when Rhaenyra comes to the throne
*While alone, Larys Strong reveals to Alicent that Rhaenyra was given Moon Tea (abortifacient)
*Alicent questions Ser Criston, Rhaenyra's sworn shield, probing to see if Rhaenyra slept with Daemon
*Criston Cole misinterprets the question and admits to sleeping with Rhaenyra
*Feeling betrayed, Alicent breaks publicly with Rhaenyra when she appears at the wedding feast in a green gown (green being the color for Hightowers being summoned for war).
*She connects with her uncle, receiving a promise of their loyalty
*She's present when Rhaenyra marries Laenor Velaryon and when Viserys collapses from his illness
*When Criston Cole tries to kill himself after murdering Laenor's lover at the feast, Alicent stops him, indicating that they will join together in an alliance against Rhaenyra.
Arrival Scenario: Kingdom of Thorne
Suitability: Given Alicent's position as queen, she's been involved with decisions before. She's given advice, especially about a war effort. Later in her life, she joins the king's council and works alongside her father to see their goals fulfilled. Alicent is proper, but at her current canon point, she's stepping up to a leadership role. She'd want to study the situation and observe it, but she'll land on one side or the other and try to help her faction. She's savvy to intrigue, to the game and now to these sorts of political disputes.
Powers: None. She's a squishy woman, taught to be a lady. She's observant, savvy and intelligent.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
When Viserys chose Alicent for queen. It set off a chain of events in her life that lead her to her current canonpoint where she is asserting her position as queen. That announcement removed her as a simple observer and supporter of Rhaenyra, but also an impediment to the succession. Alicent, being young and fertile, was inevitably going to have children. It was also inevitable that lines would be drawn and factions started over whether Rhaenyra or Aegon should rule. As much as Alicent loves Rhaenyra, she would be pulled in different directions, torn between loyalty for her family and love for Rhaenyra. That marriage also guaranteed that Alicent would spend the majority of her life lonely and bitter, paving the way for her suspicions to grow and conflict to come up more easily.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Alicent is very rigid in what she views as proper behavior. Put generally, she follows the patriarchy and believes her role as a woman and a queen is to wield soft power. To advise and guide the men around her, despite the fact she will more often be used as a pawn. Her power is power already given as queen and she doesn't seek anything beyond what would be allowed. This leads her to have stringent ideas about sex before marriage, breaking vows (especially marriage vows) and treason. It has a tendency to lead her into hypocrisy, particularly where Criston Cole is concerned, as she overlooks his crimes. She also overlooks her father's potential treason, as he tries to upend the succession.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Alicent admires chivalry, including honesty and loyalty. She believes by following the word of the Seven and acting within the bounds of propriety means that you are on the side of righteousness. She admires Ser Criston Cole the most, believing that he is a perfect knight. She is more likely to believe someone when they swear by the gods or by someone deceased, putting a great deal of stock in those gestures. One of the few times that Alicent is also seen really glowing and happy is when she and Rhaenyra were watching the tournament. Participating, giving her favor to a knight, and watching the spectacle all fell within the realm of chivalry.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
That she can't be free in the way Rhaenyra is. She, without question, follows her father and the patriarchy. She has so many expectations and anxiety, it's impossible for her to overturn her duty for her own amusement. This dislike in herself shifts and becomes more toxic until it becomes bitter jealousy towards Rhaenyra. It drives her crazy that Rhaenyra is able to get away with thumbing her nose at her duties and the expectations of the realm. That Viserys makes excuses for her and lets these things slide. Meanwhile Alicent, is held to a standard that seems impossible to break, at least from her viewpoint. Her sense of duty is so rigid that she can't contemplate anything but "creating a window for her prison" as one character put it. The only real outlet she has is expressed in her anxiety, which manifests as picking her cuticles.
What is their sign, and why? The Tower. While Alicent follows the patriarchy, given her place in canon, this is technically seen as rebellion to the changing order of the realm where a woman may rule. Her appearance during the feast was a signal of coming chaos, that she wasn't going to simply sit by and accept these things but actually fight for her right and her children's safety. It will eventually lead to war and chaos, the foundation being lain that night.
