Helaena does not prefer to be touched. [Something that she never admitted to anyone, save for her nurse. Aegon would be more delighted to be on a horse, but her daughter should follow in the wheelhouse. It would at least spare them from constant crying.] Their nurse does not ride. It might be easier for both of them to travel in the wheelhouse.
[What was she doing? This was foolish, but momentarily needed. She wanted a bit of air, to pull away from the pressure closing in around her. Larys, Viserys, her father. Each of them picked at her and it was becoming overwhelming, especially when surrounded by the eyes of the court. Being away, even if with guards seemed almost liberating.
She couldn't think that way. Instead, she pushed herself to believe it was for the children. There was no other reason and no other feeling in her. Not pressure, not need for liberation, nothing beyond duty.]
[ There’s a softness to his eyes for that admittance, head tilting just a little. ] That must make it harder to quell her when she cries. A wheelhouse for the nurse and Princess then. I’ll see it prepared as well, while you get the children and nurse ready. There’s a gentle mare I can prepare for you, if you would be up to ride?
[ Something she doesn’t get often either, he’s offering her a choice in riding with him if her daughter will be in the wheelhouse. And he’s being attending to her, by offering her a mare known to be gentle. A softer side of him, but also showing he is paying attention. He knows she doesn’t ride much at all, isn’t arguing the need for what she feels is needed.
Ever the good brother. He’ll bow slightly to her though, only waiting until she answers him about the mare before he’ll leave her to prepare everything. Only the children needing her attention and preparation, while he prepares everything else. It’s no surprise that Cole is among the guard either, insisting he see his Queen’s safety first hand. And part of Daemon wants to argue, he won’t for now. It may help Alicent be more comfortable with him whisking her and the children off for a quieter afternoon.
Everything being ready by the time she and the children are out of the large tent. ]
Whether I am around or not, she continually cries. [The reason baffled her. The Maesters said it was a common ailment in children, though Aegon had never suffered from it. She was overwhelmed by it, still too young to truly understand how to care for children. She could only trust the nurse to see to the princess and find a way to calm her.] The gentle mare shall serve, so long as we travel slowly.
[Larys's eyes had followed her as she spoke to the nurse and collected the children. The women whispered and watched, curious and ready to gossip about whatever it was she was planning. She was a queen and any possible misstep was noticed and eagerly awaited.
Criston Cole expressed his mistrust of Daemon, warning her this might not be wise. She had touched the young knight's hand, a small expression of familiarity between them. It was enough to reassure him and he eagerly agreed to follow, if only to protect her virtue and reputation.
When she was ready, a footstool was prepared, helping Alicent into the saddle, sitting astride. She was nervous, but the mare didn't seem to notice. Glancing back at the wheelhouse, it seemed everything was ready.]
Have you tried giving her just a touch of honeyed wine, something smooth and sweet, maybe warmed just a little? I was told it helped me when I cried because I had a cough when young. [ An offer of something few knew about him from his childhood. And a show of offering her something of trust. There’s no reason to offer help to calm his niece save for trying to find help to ease both Alicent and the niece. It gives him nothing to gain save Alicent’s trust that sometimes he can be kind.
He doesn’t quite hover, but waits until she’s on the mare before he mounts his own horse. Once in the saddle, the nurse lifts Aegon up to him and he settles his nephew in front of him, arms carefully boxing him in safely.
His head bows a little, bringing his horse up next to Alicent. ] I promise to keep him safe, Alicent. On my life. [ He has no ill will toward his niece or nephew, in this she definitely can trust him. And Aegon already looks bright, clapping at the ride before they’re really moving. ] And we will ride slowly. It’s not too far.
[ He clicks his tongue gently, his stallion starting to walk with a huff at her mare who falls into a slow walk to stay even with him without much guidance needed. ] I know you aren’t overly fond of these hunts for Aegon’s nameday, especially since he’s far too young to participate.
[He caught her off guard with that suggestion, revealing her ignorance as a mother, as well as any idea of how to care for her daughter. It was a disappointment that she knew so little and seemingly was failing at one of her duties. She prayed to the Mother for guidance, but it seemed that Daemon had better ideas than even the maesters.]
I have not. [It was something to consider and explore later. She was so preoccupied with the thought that she didn't notice that he called her by her given name rather than 'your grace'. There was a sharp look from Criston, but she was unaware what he was responding to.
Urging her mare forward, she kept her attention on Aegon. She guided the horse, following Daemon, but where she could, she was careful not to turn away from her son.]
A hunt can be entertaining. [But he was right. She was a bit bored by the whole event. It was a bit more busy and crowded than a tournament. At least then she had some distraction. Now, she could only wait with the ladies, doing nothing but talking about mindless things.] When he is old enough, his father will teach him how to hunt.
[ He hadn’t meant for it to be a suggestion that showed her missteps as a mother. If it hadn’t been tried it means even the nurse hadn’t considered it. Few think of things like that, but from what he’d heard, the honey of the wine soothed the cough while the little bit of alcohol helped to calm until sleep could be found. All he hoped was that maybe it might work and help Helaena and Alicent find some sleep and peace.
There’s the slightest glance back at Christon, only having used her given name instead of her title as a way of really putting importance on the promise to keep Aegon safe.
As Aegon seems to enjoy riding with him, he’ll offer the boy a bit of the reigns, letting him flick them a little like he could make the horse go faster, though the horse stays at a steady walk, not minding being pretend rushed. ]
He will. Or your knight can as well, my brother loves a good hunt but isn’t the best at it. Like his rule, he favors peace over blood. [ His tone is light, because he’s not putting Viserys down. It’s more stating fact. ] I think he does these more to appease the houses and continue with their favor. Which isn’t a bad reason to hold them, but at least with the tournaments there are activities to watch for those not hunting or fighting.
[It was clear that Aegon would take to riding and hunting easily, as he should. Without Viserys's attentions, her son would be left with little help. Criston Cole had stepped into the role of a father where he could. Seeing another with her son, pleasing and entertaining him was not unique, but it was still nice to see. She had always assumed that Daemon preferred Rhaenyra, that her children would only be viewed as a threat to her title as heir or his place in further inheritance. Her father would be horrified at letting Daemon handle Aegon. Perhaps she was a fool, but she would extend that much trust to him.
She knew nothing of King Jaehaerys's court, but from what her father said, Viserys kept a similar tradition of peace and entertainment. Without war, men needed diversions. Hunting and tournaments allowed them to feed their bloodlust. She might not understand, but it was wise for such things. It kept trouble at bay, even though it was becoming clearer that someday, there would be an issue with the succession.
Her father made that clear.]
The king prefers peace and it may pacify the Houses, but it's expected of a king. It's his duty. [Duty again, her favorite shield from any other thoughts.] Soon enough there will be a progress. He hasn't done that as often as King Jaehaerys, but the council is urging him to visit the powerful Houses.
[ Daemon knew better than to offer his services in helping Aegon when he was older. At least now. It was enough that she trusted him to let Aegon ride with him right now. As much as her father might not like the idea of Daemon being like this with Aegon, he’s been nothing but soft with the boy. Careful, and keeping him safe, even entertained.
He’d settled his jealousy over Rhaenyra taking the title of heir from him back when it was done. They’d had their moment of understanding on the bridge when she’d come to get the dragon egg back. Even if Viserys decided to give Aegon the title of heir, he wouldn’t begrudge the boy now, there’d come a level of peace with his no longer being heir. In some ways, his interest in Rhaenyra was partially ambition Becauze through her he could have the throne.
But he would agree and echo her father’s warning. There will likely be a fight for the throne if she wasn’t careful. ]
Duty is a hard burden to bare sometimes. [ There is that word again. It can sometimes be the death of happiness, duty. But in royalty, it was a must as well. ] Will you be joining him or will you stay in the Keep with Aegon and Helaena?
It is but the Gods wish it of us. [She was sincere in her faith. It was fairly well known that Daemon wasn't a religious man. If he could still hold to the Valyrian gods, she suspected he would. He certainly preferred the old traditions rather than the expectations of the High Septon. She hadn't forgotten his threat to marry his woman and insisting the stolen egg belonged to their child.] When duty is served, there is at least satisfaction.
[A little, at least. It pleased her father, it pleased Viserys and it pleased the people. How could she ignore that or fight against it?
She suspected what the question meant, but she ignores the warning in the back of her mind, trying to convince herself that he was merely being polite.]
I am to travel with the King. The people should see their King as well as their Queen. [She didn't like the idea of being watched, but it was something she was growing more used to since that feast. At least going on progress would give her more experience in showing herself as a queen. There would be allies as well, men that she might be able to gain the support of, if only to protect Aegon in the future.]
He has said that he wishes for his family to follow, save for the children. They are too young.
[ There's a smart remark about the Gods wishing it on this tongue, but it never makes it out of his mouth. He's not looking to goad her into an argument after getting her nearly alone for a peaceful afternoon away from most of court. Though she's not wrong either, he's a very tactical man so if he can't touch the gods how should he believe in them? What he believed in was dragons giving his family what they held now, not gods. Though he did also follow the traditions of the old ways of his family, he finds them soothing, connecting to them. ] When duty is served, there is result. I would argue some on if it's satisfactory or not. Though to that, it would depend on who is doing the serving for what or who and how it went about.
[ He'd argue that the whole point is that she's missing satisfaction for herself. That's been the point he's been slowly trying to hammer home to her over the course of their conversations, even by raven. That she'll never feel fulfilled the way she was hoping if she never finds satisfaction for herself. Why not fight for her own needs?
The back of her mind is definitely not too far off with his curiosity. Will she be alone that he can potentially get her alone again. Alone alone too, not with Cole by her side. Though he asks it pleasantly enough. ]
I would agree on that point. They should see you, you are important to the realm just as much as he is. [ She's not wrong about the political advantage of having houses or even just men from houses on her side when the coming war finally arrives. Unless she can find a way to reconcile with Rhaenyra and come to a proper agreement about the throne, it was inevitable. He's also pretty sure he knows why she's shy at the idea of being in the public eye, but that has more to do with how she was raised. Always the wallflower compared to Rhaenyra's vibrancy and inability to get into trouble. ]
It might be too loud for the children just yet. They'd likely be safer at the keep with your Sir Cole.
[Keeping his smart remark to himself is the best choice he could make. Pushing and pushing Alicent had her uncertain and afraid, but backing her into that corner would never fully work. Often the way to tame a wild bird or dragon was through persistence, gentleness and waiting. Duty and the Gods were one and the same for her, not straying far from the other. Breaking her duty meant breaking her oaths to the Gods, something she continually told herself since the last banquet with Daemon. There had been contrition, alms distributed and several long hours in prayer. Challenging that work, that belief, she would not take it well.
She lets his words remain, not about to challenge him over it either.]
Not nearly as important, but I have a role to play and the ladies of Noble Houses will likely have petitions for me as well. [The tedious things that a queen must do. She would be asked for placement for the young, unmarried daughters. She'd receive numerous candidates along the way, along with requests to foster children, give sons a place in her House or, at the very least, a knighthood. She would have far less than Viserys in terms of audiences, but she would have her share.
She near laughed in surprise.] The children remain behind, but Ser Criston is sworn to me. There will be two other Kingsguard staying behind with the children as well as their household.
[ He's learning, slowly about the best ways to handle her so they get along better. Still clashing at different areas, but less in the throwing something at him, and more just the way her nose wrinkles and she looks at him like he might very well have gone mad for what's coming out of his mouth. Some might say it's a new level for him, the way he hasn't let her stand on her duty and faith let her waiver too much since the kiss diswade him from his interest in her.
He'd actually argue that those that think so never truly knew him though. He's very focused when he's decided he wants someone, or wants to be closer to them as a whole. ]
Ever needing places for their children, blessings on their unborn. Yes, but the happiness of the Lord's Lady's can be just as important as the Lord's interaction with my brother. A mixed meeting with the King, but a good word from a Lady wife about her meeting with the Queen when they come back together can sway opinions. [ He pays more attention to the comings and goings of court than most give him credit for too. Even Alicent, considering he's pretty sure she doesn't think he pays much attention at all considering how he pushes at rules. His head tilts just a little though. ] Be careful who you agree to place where though. Some are more wolf than sheep in their requests and the reasons behind them.
[ Does she need the reminder? Maybe not, but he's offering it all the same. To tread carefully in what she agrees to, to think about what motives could be behind the request. A concern offered for her, about her, the tone soft and not chastising or sounding like he knows more but truly just a well intentioned warning to keep in mind.
He may like war, thrive in it, but he doesn't want to see her get caught up in it if he can help it some.
That laugh though, has his head tilt and he can't help himself in sparing a glance over at the knight in question. It's definitely a calculating look, like he's found something he needs to puzzle out. Which, to be far, he does. How to get her from the ever shadow of her thorn in the paw knight. ] Of course, I just thought you'd perhaps want the best looking after them since you won't be there to see to them personally. [ A compliment and yet a way to almost question bringing him verse leaving the knight. Not that he thinks it will work, he's smarter than that. ]
[She has had some time to see that he has some understanding of the realm and the workings of the court. If he didn't, he wouldn't have excelled at so many roles. His place in the council was such a thorn to her father because he was able to parry against his attacks and aspersions. It isn't a shock he knows what a queen is expected of during these progresses. He'd lived at court, his father had been heir. When he was heir, he was perhaps presented with a similar idea.
His advice is ironic, given his actions and intentions towards her. Whether he genuinely wanted her, he wasn't afraid to risk her safety for passion. As for vipers around her, hadn't many alluded that was what her father did? That she was the viper next to him for the sake of advancement. She wasn't naïve, either to what was said of her or what others intended. She could navigate the situation rather well. With Larys Strong eager to advance himself, he'd likely share whatever gossip he knew about the families, which she could register or discard as needed.]
I believe I can tell when someone means to use me for their own desires. [A simple, but pointed statement. One that Ser Criston wouldn't grasp right away, though he had remarked that he worried about Daemon's interests. Whether that was because of his own feelings (which she knew) or genuine concern, she didn't press him. Her own measure of hypocrisy, as she questioned Daemon constantly.]
All of the Kingsguard are highly skilled. With two guarding my son, I have no fears. [Not that she truly had any say over her son's upbringing, education or protectors. She had some influence, but the king and council decided on the first born son's life, not his mother.] If, as you believe, I will be visiting nobles who may not have pure intentions, it would be wise for me to take a knight willing to protect me with his life.
[ He excels at the roles because he also does gives his full attention and effort when given a role. When he was made command of the gold cloaks, he saw to it that they did their job and did it well. When he was heir, he made sure to pay attention and know what he was doing, what would ensure the people would accept and love him as heir. And when he was exiled, he made sure that he did what his brother refused to, and secured the Stepstones with his cousins.
Just because he has different views on the how from Viserys or Otto doesn't mean he doesn't have an idea of what is good for the realm. Even when it's not his anymore to care for that way.
She assumes that were she to give into her passions and desires, he wouldn't keep her safe under his protection. But he would. He wasn't asking her to shout from the keep's balcony how he had made her feel, how the heat had run through her veins. He's also very aware at what's at risk if that continues in any way, which he hopes it does. Which is why he's hedged his cards carefully. Been slow at getting closer to her, offering her a way to potentially start to trust at least some of his actions. ]
But would you use them for your own desires given the chance? [ A simple, very pointed counter. Was he offering to be used if it meant breaking some of her shell and showing her how to be powerful? In some ways that he'd enjoy, very much. He offers her a small smile as his head tilts just a little toward the waterfall because discussion has made the ride that much quicker for them as well. ] And I would argue that when you are in a seat of power such as your own, you may see someone's intentions as using you, when they are merely offering something you aren't used to in genuine manners.
[ He'll guide his horse over to a large tree with some low branches that they can secure the reins to. Though he'll wait until someone can take Aegon from him before getting down himself, ensuring the boy's safety above all else. What he hates is that it will likely keep him from helping Alicent off her horse, though he'll carry Aegon over to her, the boy on his hip. ] Most would say what better than a skilled knight, save for one advantage. What better than a dragon at your side to protect you? And a dragon that's visited most of the Lords and Ladies you'll be speaking to so he'll have inside knowledge that most won't have, and your knight certainly won't.
[She lets that question hang in the air, watching the approach of the waterfall in contemplation. The only way he might see her hesitation or consideration was the small bite to her lower lip. It was his consistent assertion, that insistence that he wanted her without ulterior motives. She's heard it often enough she could quote it back to him. He hadn't grown bored yet to the hunt, preferring to continually press her, whether hard of subtly. She was listening now more than before, but she still didn't accept it fully.
Ser Criston was quick to her side, helping her from her horse. His hands lingered a moment to long on her waist, the pair of them closer than exactly appropriate, but she moved away before it lingered too long. She reaches for Aegon, the child that wouldn't squall if she held him. She brushed his hair from his face, glancing over towards the nurse with Helaena. Two of the servants were quick to bring caps for the children, protecting them from the sun.
She frowned, feeling Ser Criston tense behind her.] I know that dragons are unpredictable creatures better suited for war than as guards. I would hope that the king would be served by such a creature, protecting his life and safety. As I am not a Targaryen, I cannot have a claim to a dragon.
[She looked back at Ser Criston with a measure of fondness.] A lady is meant to be protected by a knight, not a dragon.
[ Slow and steady, carefully weighted when they needed to be. But no, he hasn't shied away from the hunt of her either. His attentions haven't turned toward any other woman around them, there've been no whispers of him visiting the brothels or finding a mistress to keep him entertained while he's been at court and silently circling Alicent. An eerie faithfulness to her as a way to show her that he means his words, his attentions, and his intentions with her. She's not just a conquest to notch on his belt, but he's legitimately interested in her.
He notices that linger, much as she tries not to let it go on too long, earning a subtle frown as he gives Aegon to her without question. Her son is bubbly and happy for the ride, for the attention, though seeming less so for that cap to protect him from the sun.
The take of actual dragon his him give her a look though. He hadn't meant dragon like his dragon, but him. Measuring and trying to gauge if she didn't catch his meaning or if she's trying to easily wash it from Criston's suspicions. ] Sometimes creatures of war are a far better protection outside of the safety of the Keep, because it means they will do anything to keep you alive and safe, even if it means tearing down a wall of threat a knight isn't ready to handle.
[ Does he know that Criston has seen battle? Of course, but not like Daemon has. Nearly losing the battle, his life to it. It means he knows what he has to do far better in more dangerous situations. ] And a Lady may be meant to be protected by a knight, but you aren't just a lady but a queen. And married to a dragon. What better to protect a dragon's wife than a dragon that will see her safety above everyone else?
[She adjusts the cap, trying to shush Aegon's protests. While she had little experience and was quite young when she had her son, she did her best to learn and guide him. A prince, the first prince, was not truly hers and these efforts were limited to these moments, but she tried to leave some influence. Helaena, she seemed better behaved with her nurse, even she was squirming and fussing, indicating a soon to be tantrum. Part of her had to wonder if it was wise to bring Helaena to social gatherings.
She ignored his look, content to pretend nothing unusual had happened.
His meaning had not been lost on her, but she knew how to navigate this conversation to keep others from understanding either of their meanings. Daemon was better suited to war, chaos and violence. Ser Criston was a different sort of man (despite his violent tendencies). Keeping Ser Criston was less dangerous than it was having Daemon Targaryen at her side.]
Creatures of war are a weapon I would rather not utilize until such a time that force of that nature is needed. [She settled on the blanket spread out for them, careful to keep Aegon and several pillows between Daemon and herself. She would not make such a mistake again.
A small dragon toy was offered to Aegon, catching his full attention.]
Perhaps then I should have my sworn knight and a dragon guarding me? As you say, my position is important to warrant such protection?
[ She's doing what she can, and even he can see that. The issue is that her father, his brother, neither are doing the boy any benefit seeing him spoiled like the prince he was. Or well, at least in things. Viserys could spend some time with the boy, and he'd be a second coming of Rhaenyra, but Daemon knows why his brother doesn't have much interest in the boy or his queen past his own needs.
She says that now, but it means she's also forgetting just how charming he can be when he wants to be. Distracting for women, letting things slip, and comradery toward men he might converse with as well. An asset to have at her side in some ways.
Before he settles, he sees Helaena being fussy with her nurse and moves to lift her from the woman's arms. Dipping his head he murmurs something softly in Valyrian, that's almost got the cadence of a song before he moves to settle with a quieter princess in his lap. A princess who reaches to catch a strand of his hair in a tight little fist as she looks up at the sky like she can see something no one else can. Calm and quieter as his hand strokes Helaena's back gently.
He's noticed the pillows she's settled between them but doesn't remark on it. He'd tilt his head at the questions and compromise, but instead Helaena jerks her hand down and his head moves with it with a wince but he doesn't look like he minds much either. ] You may not want to utilize such force, but having it at your side would let people know you have it all the same. And perhaps you should, because it is important enough to warrant such protection. I'm sure my brother would agree, that you are important enough.
[She does her best not to stare as he carries Helaena, managing to calm her and stop her cries. She even holds at his hair, something she's never done for anyone else. It worries her. While she's touched he can ease her daughter, it shows the power he has in swaying someone. She remembers the balcony, how quickly he pushed past her defenses, and kissed her. Her daughter was an indication what could soon happen.
Her hand tightened around Aegon, as though he could keep such things at bay. If she had wine, she could hide behind that as well. This was a mistake and she had fallen into the trap without realizing it. Now, she could only attempt to fend off his overtures, even when she had to agree with some of his suggestions.]
Perhaps it is wise and I shall accept that protection with thanks, but I prefer the dragon to keep watch a distance. His pit or nest would be better to keep vigilance from. The knight close at my side, the dragon at a distance.
[Doing her best to avoid his gaze, she stared ahead at the waterfall. It was beautiful, but all of the scenery disappeared under the tension of Daemon's eyes on her.]
[ He can hear some of the whispers of the nurses at how good Helaena is being with him. When she looks around and seems a little upset he dips to murmur that Vaylerian song against her hair again and it quiets her again. A soft kiss placed to the crown of her head as he sighs softly. ]
Her trust in me likely stems from blood, my Queen. They are dragon, like me and my brother. Sometimes, they need someone that feels similar. The same way we bond with our dragons, on a deeper level because we are kin. It is something that doesn’t always need words, just a closeness.
[ It’s not something Targaryens share often, the inner workings about how they bond with the dragons. It’s always been rumored that they share blood but he’s offering her confirmation. They do. And he wasn’t sure why Helaena was so temperamental, but being close to kin seemed to help her. Something that likely would have been noticed sooner of Viserys cared about his children.
He closes his eyes to rest with the girl quietly. ] And a dragon can be gentle, not just an instrument of war. Protection. Warmth. Heat. All can stem from a dragon if you stop fearing them because you’ve never truly known them.
Caraxes isn’t just a mount and fire and rage. He is a trusted kin to me, I know he will stand by me, protect me when I need it. And in turn I give him my trust. Not just to not hurt me but to be there at my side. One day, maybe you can find a way to see that past the fear you hold for them.
[Perhaps he did soothe her with Valyrian magic, but she knew just as well how he could tempt a woman and pull her into his control. There was also a sense of worry about him bonding with her children. It would draw him more into their circle, inviting more visits, more interactions. That was where the danger was. What if Helaena became more attached to him than her father or her mother? What if Aegon idolized Daemon and wished to emulate him?
What if he became more of a father than their true father?
She cleared her throat, frazzled and confused. Once again, it was as if she was on the balcony, feeling that intensity and desire. It wasn't simply for her body but for more. Perhaps not love, but some other sort of connection that would be impossible for her to break.]
She is a dragon, but she has her likes and dislikes. She- [normally] doesn't like people. She may bond more with her dragon than others. [This- this was different and worrisome.] Her father will see she is made comfortable.
[She does know how soothing and deep the bond with a dragon can run. That is what made her tremble. She feared dragons for their danger and never felt comfortable around them, but this might be the only one that she would be coaxed by.]
Caraxes is unique to you alone. I have no dragonblood. I will never know such a bond.
[She picked at her nails, the old habit returning.]
You have made your point well and I do accept protection from both dragon and knight, but I cannot be near the dragon. I must not be.
[ Were that he was thinking that far ahead. Alicent was giving him far more credit, or perhaps was just thinking further ahead than he has been. Riding with Aegon, soothing Helaena, had been to try and show Alicent could trust him. That he could be soft and gentle. That he could keep some of those lines in place in public, much as all he wanted to do was feel those soft lips against his again, feel the way her chest rose faster against his with how he made her feel.
Soothing Helaena had also been something he’d felt he just needed to do, to be honest. He didn’t like that his niece was so upset. Wanting to find a way to fix it. And he had been lucky it worked, that she’s responded as she did. ]
Were that you allowed it, I could teach you the Valyrian I sang to her. It might let you get closer to her so she won’t fuss as much. [ He holds up one hand, like he’s going to stop her from accusing him of doing it to get closer to her, to win her over. ] I offer this because I can see how much she doesn’t like people and whether you want to snow it or not, as her mother you deserve to find ways to be closer to her. Only that. That it will hopefully help you sit and hold her, ease her when court is too much for her.
I know my reputation, your Grace, but for my niece, I offer it purely as an Uncle wishing to see kin not hurting.
[ Nothing to do with the silent battle between them. Something Viserys won’t do, he barely speaks the old tongue anymore anyway. If it grants Alicent a little more closeness to Helaena too, would it not be worth learning?
And there’s a slow nod at her words about him. The way his lips tighten, like he wants to argue with her but is holding his tongue speaks well that he understands. ] I understand, much as I disagree. But I understand.
[It might well not be his motive, but he didn't know how children might latch onto him. They were young enough to want attention and affection, especially from their father. Having Daemon instead, they could easily shift their love from Viserys to him. Daemon was not a father, he might not be aware of any of this, particularly with an absent parent. Or perhaps he did? Everything was unclear to her.
Teaching her Valyrian, she wasn't certain what to think. She knew a few words from the lessons her sons had and hearing Rhaenyra speak it often. Learning a lullaby might be good for Helaena. It would mean Daemon would spend more time with her. Another trap or genuine concern?]
Does the king know the song? [That could be some sort of out?] I believe this a genuine offer out of love for the children. You have always been truly loyal to your family. [But never beyond his own interests. That has always been Daemon.] I shall consider the offer.
[Which meant she was likely to take it, but was too afraid to admit it.]
[ It was lack of having children himself that kept him from knowing the children may latch to him as a father figure verses their uncle with the attention. He loves his brother enough he would never try to replace Viserys as their father in affection.
Just enough to seduce the Queen, but that was not what he was aiming for here. Here, he was trying to be a good uncle for the kids. Genuine concern with a well earned reward, technically. ]
I don’t think he remembers. [ Viserys was too busy with being king to even sing it to Rhaenyra as a child. Maybe that explained why the two were always so much closer in some ways. He had at times given Rhaenyra the attention Viserys was too busy to give her, and she was by far his favorite. ] I was the one to sing it to Rhaenyra as a child, not my brother. And I shall let you consider it as you need to, your Grace.
[ He’ll be happy to teach her, partly because it should help. But we’ll, he can’t be sad to spend time with her.
His head bows to the side as best he can being held captive by a tiny child. It’s a cute enough image the nurses are coping and whispering over it, how good the prince looks with a child and how good he is with her. ] I will let my brother know I will be joining and meet my Queen there. Perhaps when we get to Storm’s End you can give me your answer about learning the lullaby?
[She understood what that might mean, accepting at Storm's End. The distance she suggested would be broken. There was a part of her as well that felt...as if she wanted it. Despite herself, she does think of his lips and how lush they were, how warm his body felt and the tickle of his breath against her neck. She shivered, as though some wind had slithered through the leaves. The thought occurs to her more and more that maybe they could talk more quietly? Slip into the woods? But each time it crossed her mind, she had to convince herself that such a move would only be to persuade him to let her be.
She tucked her legs further under her skirts, keeping them tight together, even as she wondered what his hands might feel like there. Alicent cleared her throat, gesturing for the nurse to take both Aegon and Helaena. Both would need to be fed and kept in the shade. Too long under the sun, they would grow ill.
Now there was no child between them. She was battling herself, tempted and afraid. Did he know? Could he sense it? She- she might like another kiss.]
It may well be then. If no other knows the song, you might have to be the one to teach me.

Date: 2022-11-06 05:17 am (UTC)I have not.

Date: 2022-11-06 05:33 am (UTC)There’s the slightest glance back at Christon, only having used her given name instead of her title as a way of really putting importance on the promise to keep Aegon safe.

Date: 2022-11-06 05:45 am (UTC)She knew nothing of King Jaehaerys's court, but from what her father said, Viserys kept a similar tradition of peace and entertainment.

She suspected what the question meant, but she ignores the warning in the back of her mind, trying to convince herself that he was merely being polite.]
I am to travel with the King. The people should see their King as well as their Queen. [She didn't like the idea of being watched, but it was something she was growing more used to since that feast. At least going on progress would give her more experience in showing herself as a queen. There would be allies as well, men that she might be able to gain the support of, if only to protect Aegon in the future.]

Date: 2022-11-11 09:49 pm (UTC)[ He'd argue that the whole point is that she's missing satisfaction for herself.

Ser Criston will be at my side.

Date: 2022-11-12 02:28 am (UTC)His advice is ironic, given his actions and intentions towards her.

Date: 2022-11-12 03:00 am (UTC)Just because he has different views on the how from Viserys or Otto doesn't mean he doesn't have an idea of what is good for the realm.

Date: 2022-11-12 03:26 am (UTC)Ser Criston was quick to her side, helping her from her horse.
[She looked back at Ser Criston with a measure of fondness.] A lady is meant to be protected by a knight, not a dragon.
no subject
Date: 2022-11-12 03:39 am (UTC)He notices that linger, much as she tries not to let it go on too long, earning a subtle frown as he gives Aegon to her without question.
What better to protect a dragon's wife than a dragon that will see her safety above everyone else?
no subject
Date: 2022-11-12 04:03 am (UTC)She ignored his look, content to pretend nothing unusual had happened.

Date: 2022-11-12 04:19 am (UTC)She says that now, but it means she's also forgetting just how charming he can be when he wants to be.

Date: 2022-11-12 05:06 am (UTC)Her trust in me likely stems from blood, my Queen.

Were that you allowed it, I could teach you the Valyrian I sang to her. It might let you get closer to her so she won’t fuss as much.
